Its installations were inaugurated in 1993, and it also has a Dependency in Barrosas, aiming to improve the services given through the creation of an ampler space endowed with the necessary equipment. The City Hall financed the project, appealing to the Institute of National Library and Book's support and to PRORN and PRONORE's participations. In January 1996 the Idães Dependency opened, and in November 1997 the Itinerant Library started to circulate through all the municipality's parishes and schools.
Asides from the usual spaces, it has an interior garden and an auditory with capacity for about 200 people, complemented by another one of smaller dimensions, located outdoors in the surrounding natural space.
This modern cultural facility gives the local inhabitants access to media such as books, magazines and audio and video cassettes, covering all basic areas of knowledge.
The library's update is a priority, answering the needs of all its users.
Apart from a modern functional space and a pleasant and attractive facility, the Municipal Library of Felgueiras relies on its specialized technical staff, a correct disposition of its documents and the access to the new technologies so that the users can do it in an intuitive way.
The intention is to develop all the community, from the youngest to the aged, by promoting books and reading. Knowing that reading is a necessary universal right to the growth of the individual and his active participation in society, the Municipal Library of Felgueiras has an extension working in the Village of Barrosas, the Idães Dependency, with about 4.000 books, and the service of the Itinerant Library is also available with about 3.000 books. The Municipal Library foresees a short-term extension in the city of Lixa.
Programmed animation and awareness activities have been carried out by this Library for the attainment of its goals: the "Story Telling Hour" for the little ones, the circulation of bibliographically adjusted book packages throughout municipal schools and the prison, movies sessions suitable to the different age groups, meetings with writers, exhibits on the most varied subjects, as well as of local and national authors, conferences and lectures on subjects on the national and regional agenda.
